Mill Street Barracks, located in St Helens, Merseyside, has a rich military history dating back to its completion in 1861. Originally designed as the headquarters for the 47th Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps, the barracks played a significant role in accommodating various branches of the armed forces through numerous wars and battles.
Throughout its history, the barracks underwent several transformations, evolving into the 21st Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps in 1880, the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of The Prince of Wales’s Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment) in 1886, and later the 5th Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment in 1908. During World War I, the battalion mobilized at Mill Street Barracks before being deployed to the Western Front. The site continued to serve military purposes during World War II, with the battalion converting to the 61st (5th Battalion, The South Lancashire Regiment) Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery in 1940.
In addition to its military functions, the barracks also served as a morgue during several wars, including World War II, where the cellar was used to hold the bodies of fallen citizens and soldiers during German bombing raids over industrial cities in Northern England.
After the military presence was reduced in 1969, the barracks were decommissioned and converted for use by the Sea Cadets as the Training Ship Scimitar.
Today, Mill Street Barracks stands as a testament to its storied past, reflecting its significant contributions to the local community and the nation’s military history.
