History of Peterborough Museum

The museum site has a rich history, with the first house dating back to the 16th century. It was a mansion built for the Orme family, who received land from King Henry VIII in 1536. The Tudor building called Neville Place was the first structure on the site, and its remains can still be seen in the Priest Gate Vaults. These historic cellars also hold stories of ghosts from the past. The current building's core was established in 1816 when it became the residence of Thomas Cooke, a local magistrate, and his first wife, Judith. Legend has it that Cooke would pass judgment on people even during breakfast. If someone found not guilty, they would be sent away with a pint of beer. It was said that if they hadn't been drunk and disorderly before, they would be by the time they left. Peterborough Museum boasts an impressive collection of over 227,000 objects, including local archaeology, social history, and significant marine fossil remains from the Jurassic period. The museum is also home to the original manuscripts of John Clare, known as the "Northamptonshire Peasant Poet," and the Norman Cross collection, which features items crafted by French prisoners of war. Norman Cross was the world's first purpose-built prisoner-of-war camp, where these prisoners were held from 1797 to 1814.
